You can perform seated rowing and pulldowns with a close grip. When using it for seated rowing, your elbows are lowered, increasing stimulation to the latissimus dorsi. (If your elbows are raised, you will primarily be stimulating the upper back muscles, such as the trapezius and rhomboid muscles. If you are aiming for this, we recommend using an attachment with a wider grip spacing.)
When used for lat pulldowns, pulling towards the lower chest makes it easier to work the lower latissimus dorsi.
